Hair matting can occur for a variety of reasons. Common causes include protein deficiency, breakage, chemical or heat damage, and infrequent detangling. Several factors can contribute, and the condition may worsen over time without proper care.
In most cases, no. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to detangle your hair prior to your appointment, especially if the severity of the tangles or mats is beyond what you’re used to. Attempting to detangle at home can sometimes lead to panic or the use of improper techniques that may worsen the situation. If you do choose to detangle yourself, we advise against mixing different methods, as this can counteract progress and increase the severity of the tangles overall.
It varies from person to person. For some, it may only take a few hours and result in a lower overall cost. For others with more severe matting, the process may take multiple sessions and be more costly. Detangling is inherently unpredictable, but we always work efficiently while prioritizing the integrity of your hair. We understand that this can be a significant investment, and we will ensure that you are fully informed of the process, timeline, and potential outcomes before moving forward.
Our lead stylist, Umar, is the primary professional handling detangling services. On occasion, a trained assistant may help, but rest assured, no one without proper training will work on your hair.
Yes! We know that the pulling motion of detangling can make your scalp sore so we can take a break. We understand that occasional breaks may be necessary, and we do not charge for brief, reasonable breaks. However, if breaks become excessive or begin to impact the flow and efficiency of our time together, we reserve the right to include that time in the final billing.
We suggest taking a Tylenol or similar over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment to help reduce discomfort. During the detangling process, please don’t hesitate to let us know if you’re experiencing pain, we can always shift to another area to give your scalp a break.
For the comfort and well-being of our younger clients, we do not offer detangling services for children under the age of 7. This is due to the sensitivity of their scalps and the potential stress and discomfort that extended detangling can cause.
Yes, we do. Whether you have flakes, mold, odor or just build up, we’ve seen it all. We work with many scalp conditions but we ask that you disclose any conditions prior to your appointment so that any adjustment can be made to how we approach the detangling.
Detangling services start at $125 per hour. For a mobile detangling service, travel fees may apply. Please see the travel fees on our mobile service page for further details.
